Normalmente, se suelen alimentar de grandes roedores, tapires (miden unos 2 metros y pensan entre 150 Kg. y 300 Kg.), capibaras (roedores de aproximadamente 1-1,30 metros de longitud, y un peso de entre 35 y 65 Kg.), ciervos, pecaríes (miden entre 90cm. y 1,30 m. y pesan entre 20 y 40 Kg.), peces, tortugas, ovejas, pájaros y repitles acuáticos como el caimán. Los ataques a seres humanos, se pueden dar, pero por lo general, no suele ser lo habitual. Si ven a un ser humano, es más probable que huya.
También hay algunos informes de serpientes más grandes. Como el de una serpiente de unos 9 metros y 500 Kg. de peso. Una anaconda de este tamaño, podría fácilmente comerse a un tapir grande, o a un toro. También se han encontrado muestras de serpiente de unos 50 cms. de diámetro. Un tal Percy Fawcett [en inglés] dijo que en 1906 había encontrado una anaconda de unos 18.9 metros de longitud. No se sabe si es cierto o no semejante afirmación, pero si hubo cierta polémica [en inglés, al final de la sección] sobre este asunto.

Hay que tener en cuenta que un hipopótamo adulto mide 1,5 metros de altura, y unos 3,5 metros de largo, pesando aproximadamente entre 1.500 Kg. y 3.200 Kg. (aunque se han encontrado ejempleares documentados de 4.500 Kg de peso y 5m. de largo). Una cría de hipopótamo puede pesar entre 25 Kg. y 45 Kg., y su crecimiento es rápido pues al año puede llegar a pesar unos 250 Kg. No se exactamente el peso de esta cría, así que, con estos datos quizás nos podamos hacer una idea.
